Providing Safer Urban Streets for Elderly and Handicapped Pedestrians
In many United States cities, the needs of pedestrians, especially the elderly and handicapped, are largely ignored. Many types of traffic control measures are currently available to improve the roadway environment for pedestrians. Adopting a priority accessible network is important for pedestrian planning, along with the careful selection of specific engineering measures. Such actions will help to preserve the rights and the rights of future generations to walk safely in urban areas.
