Study of Human Factors of Elderly and Handicapped Passengers in Public Transportation Safety

The study of human factors of elderly and handicapped passengers in public transit safety was part of a larger project that examined broader issues of human factors in public transportation safety. The overall goal of the research was use a systems approach in the investigation of the contribution of human factors to safety problems in public transportation. The safety problems of both drivers and passengers were examined with special emphasis given to the problems of elderly and handicapped passengers. The accomplishment of the research objectives of this project was made possible through the cooperation of transit companies which operate fixed route bus systems in the state Oregon: TRIMET (Portland); CHERRIOTS (Salem); LTD (Eugene); and CTC (Corvallis).
