Network expansion is in full swing
Iran railway development is continuing apace, with the intention being to provide rail connections between all major cities as soon as possible. Government policy is to encourage more travel within the country and passenger tariffs are heavily subsidised, generating substantial and increasing demand for travel. The author looks at the rail management functions in the light of the budget available, and comments on different aspects of the infrastructure. Plans for double tracking; electrification and re-signalling; expanding the network; creating international corridors; power issues; rolling stock information; and moves towards privatisation are explained. A map illustrates the railway infrastructure in Iran and the neighbouring countries.
