All's Well in Alicante
The transformation of Alicante, Spain's declining tram network into one of Europe's most progressive transit systems is examined. The reintroduction of trams into Alicante began in 1999, 21 years after the closing of the original network. Two aspects of this transformation are significant: it was Spain's first public transportation system to use contactless smart cards, and its tracks are shared by trams and tram-trains. Alicante's tram lines are examined, as are short- and long-term goals. Future plans include consideration of a new tramway linking a more central facility adjacent to the new bus station with the existing Benidorm station.
