Laboratory Study of Recycled Asphalt Pavement Materials as Base Course
Recycling existing asphalt pavement has become a popular technology for pavement rehabilitation. In this technology, existing pavement materials are pulverized and mixed to form a base course underlying new hot mix asphalt (HMA) layer. Recycling asphalt pavement features cost and energy saving, and environment-friendliness. To properly design the pavement structure using this technology, the engineering properties of recycled materials have to be characterized. This paper presents the characteristics of a recycled asphalt pavement material through laboratory tests, including gradation, moisture-density relationship, California bearing ratio (CBR), and resilient modulus. It was found that the gradation of recycled pavement materials was close to that of conventional crushed aggregate. The CBR values of recycled materials were relatively low. The resilient moduli were close to that of conventional crushed aggregate. The application of test results to pavement rehabilitation was discussed.
