Safety of Flying in the Air in Aspect of Using Electronic Warfare Device

The article reviews some problems of the safety of military air forces in the area of enemy air defense. The authors focus on the quality and effectiveness of an onboard electronic warfare system. Electronic warfare systems include the degree of adaptation or the capability of an aviation system to ensure the safety of the aircraft’s occupants and the aircraft itself when carrying out a flight mission or coping with a threat from the ground. Basic elements regarding the safety of an aircraft are discussed in three categories: evasion of detection, evasion of being hit, and survival after a hit. Specific equipment covered include radar warning receivers, laser warning receivers, missile warning systems, active radar jamming systems, stations/transmitters for radio electronic disturbance and infrared misguiding devices, active infrared interference systems (towed trap-decoys), passive infrared disturbance systems (flares), and systems operating within radiolocation operation ranges (chaff-dipoles). A final section briefly addresses the implications of using this work on military aircraft to improve security of civil aviation. The article is presented in both English and Polish.
