Research into the Effects of Impaired Mobility and Walking at Pedestrian Crossings in Cold, Snowy Regions
People with impaired mobility face danger when they walk on snowy/icy roads. Pedestrian crossings pose a particularly difficult obstacle because of snowy/icy curb ramps and slippery road surfaces that increase the danger to those with impaired mobility of slip-and-fall injuries. The authors monitored pedestrians’ walking behavior and speeds at pedestrian crossings in downtown Sapporo, Hokkaido. This was to compare differences between those with impaired mobility and the able-bodied concerning the survey items, to specify problems which pedestrians with impaired mobility face in walking on crossings covered with snow.
