Change of Deformation Strength Due to Mixture Aging

This study evaluated the deformation strength (SD) of several asphalt mixtures which were artificially aged in laboratory. The SD, measured by Kim Test, is regarded as the property that has a high correlation with rut tendency of asphalt mixture. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of aging on rut resistance of asphalt mixture measured by the SD experimentally. The loose asphalt mixture was aged in a forced draft oven at 154°C for 2 hours for short-term aging. The 100mm specimens, which were made of the short-term aged mixture using a Superpave gyratory compactor, were artificially aged for 4, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours at 110°C for long-term aging. The SD was measured for the aged mixture and the change of SD value was evaluated by aging level. The wheel tracking (WT) test was performed on the aged asphalt mixtures for 4, 48 and 96 hours at 110°C. The oxidation level of the binder after each level of aging was measured by relative quantity of large molecular size (LMS) using gel-permeation chromatography. It was found that the SD value was increased by the aging level increase and the SD changing pattern has a high correlation with binder aging condition, measured by LMS quantity.
