Ohio's Use of Fractured Slab Techniques - A Historical Review
For the last 20 years, the Ohio Department of Transportation has been conducting studies to identify appropriate strategies for the mitigation of reflection cracking in in-service composite pavements. Several projects were constructed using various fractures slab techniques, namely crack and seat, break and seat and rubblization, to demonstrate the ability of such techniques as a rehabilitation strategy for retarding reflection cracking in asphalt concrete overlays. Based on an analysis of performance of constructed projects, in conjunction with key variables namely, type of pavement breaker used, extent, pattern and size of broken fragments, traffic, environmental conditions, soil type and condition, ODOT intends to establish a cost-effective rehabilitation strategy for composite pavements. This information will enable the department to better determine what role various fractured slab treatments should play in the overall pavement rehabilitation program.
