Winter Operations at Munich Airport
One of Munich Airport's rules in regard to inclement weather never changes: safety comes first. The winter services unit of the airport's operating company, FMG, and the special company responsible for deicing and towing operations, EFM, are charged with making sure that no aircraft is in danger when taxiing, taking off, and landing. The author examines cold weather operations, including deicing of surfaces and aircraft, deicer recycling, and remote deicing. Inserts provide facts and figures regarding FMG's winter operations; state-of-the-art ground service vehicles for all aircraft types from Vestergaard Company A/S; and the Kahlbacher Model Vampir 620 KL elastic snow plow.
