The need for improvements of practices and policies in the provision of parking for people with disabilities

In the ACT there has been concern that the level of parking provision for people with disabilities is inadequate. To be better informed about parking for people with disabilities an assessment was undertaken on behalf of the ACT Department of Territory and Municipal Services. This assessment examined several issues including: 1. is the demand for parking for people with disabilities increasing (perhaps in line with our aging community), 2. do people with disabilities shop and do business at off peak periods to avoid crowds, 3. does the parking provision for people with disabilities meet the physical standards of access, 4. are there sufficient disabled parking spaces allocated and 5. how do the ACT provision rates compare with other jurisdictions. The project concluded that the demand for parking for people with disabilities has increased at a high rate, the levels of provision recommended in Australian Standard AS2890 are lower than the demand, there is not a close relationship between peak parking demands of disabled and able bodied people and that there are opportunities to improve the provision of disabled parking.
