Applying a Proper Tack Coat
This article explains how to properly apply a tack coat on overlays of existing asphalt and Portland cement concrete pavement. Tack coats ensure bonding between hot mix asphalt (HMA) layers so that they do not slip over each other. The author points out the importance of the tack distributor which performs a variety of functions including heating the material, circulating it, and distributing it through the spray bar. It is important that the distributor can shoot a wide range of application rates, depending on requirements. The article also describes the correct way to set up the spray bar, and notes that the nozzles should be set at the same angle from the centerline of the spray bar.
