Making it last
This paper on sustainable highways introduces best practice for road durability. A good road infrastructure has sufficient routes maintained in a serviceable condition. Pavement sustainability is an important factor in maintaining good road infrastructure. Maximising the durability of pavements has the benefits of both reducing delays caused by maintenance and reducing the costs to the road authority of that maintenance. A 3-year programme 'Performance and durability of asphalt roads' has assessed how durability could be improved. The main objective being the identification of industry best practice which culminated in the production of the 'Best practice guide for durability of asphalt pavements' (TRL Road Note 42). The study found that many factors contribute to the durability of asphalt pavements and that foundations and drainage need to be evaluated to ensure pavement survival.
