Forensic Photography and Crash Reconstruction. Part 1: The Professional Amateur Expert Witness Photographer

Photographs taken at an accident scene can be compelling evidence in legal cases. This article discusses the importance of taking photographs and some pitfalls that accident reconstructionists often make in their photography. Photographs allow evidence to be easily observed and accurately analyzed. Photographs can also illustrate the complex mathematical calculations that serve as the basis for conclusions about the accident. However, many times accident reconstructionists do not consider themselves professional photographers. They fail to learn to use their cameras to take clear photographs, and the result can be images that are poorly-lit or confusing. It is important for reconstructionists recognize that they are professional photographers and learn the skills needed to take the best photographs possible.
