Better: Economically, Socially and Environmentally
This article examines environmental programs at London Stansted, the third busiest airport in the U.K. Redeveloped in the 1990s, Stansted has grown to the point where, in 2008, it handled some 22.3 million passengers via 165 destinations, mostly on budget airways. As part of its Generation 2 (G2) expansion plan, it will be adding a second runway. The airport has satisfied ISO 14001, which specifies requirements for environmental management systems (EMS). It first achieved that status in 2005 and now holds certification until October 2011. ISO 14001 covers environmental aspects that the recipient can be expected to have control over, including energy consumption, waste disposal, and staff transport modes. Some of the specific areas are described. In the area of emissions, Stansted worked with customer airlines to reduce their use of fuel-burning ground-power units (GPUs) or built-in auxiliary power units (APUs) during their turnaround time on the ground. The airport provides fixed electric ground power on most of its aircraft stands. This not only reduces noise and carbon emissions; it saves the airlines money. It has also developed a Stansted Airport Surface Access Strategy (ASAS) that includes an airport-based carsharing scheme. Even as the number of employees has risen, the share who are driving alone to work has dropped. Other areas are carbon neutral construction for new buildings and reduced noise.
