A 10-Point Plan for Reauthorizing the Federal Highway Safety Program
Traffic accidents took the lives of 42,000 people in the United States, in 2007. This paper presents ten recommendations to Congress, by the Governors Highway Safety Association, with the goals of increasing highway safety and decreasing traffic accident fatalities and injuries. The recommendations include continuing a strong federal role in highway safety, development of a national strategic highway safety plan, emphasizing performance-based planning, enhancing financing for improving accident data, streamlining administration of grant programs, restructuring incentive programs, and strengthening state programs, among others.
