Dilatancy Properties of Indonesian Wearing Course Asphalt Mixtures

This study evaluates dilatancy of 6 Indonesian wearing course asphalt mixtures (IWCM) that differ in terms of aggregate gradation. The Bailey ratios are used to recognize characteristics of aggregate packing. Sphere aggregate assembly models are introduced to simply distinguish dilatancy, in terms of sphere aggregate motion of the 6 IWCM tested. A compression test (CT) was conducted to obtain dilatancy factors. The rank of dilatancy of the 6 tested IWCM defined by the sphere aggregate motion is almost the same as that obtained by CT. However, the agreement between dilatancy and dynamic stability obtained by wheel-tracking test is poor. Better understanding of the dilatancy is helpful, enabling highway engineers to detect early proper aggregate gradation, especially to avoid HMA rutting.
