Creating Social Epidemics and Curing Car Addiction: A New Model for Achieving Travel Behaviour Change
In the United Kingdom, travel behavior change (TBC) programs are often referred to as "Smarter Choices" programs. These programs include alternatives to single occupant vehicles, such as vanpools, car sharing, travel planning, and personalized travel planning (PTP). TBC is the focus of this article, which uses the perspective of achieving mass social behavioral change, instead of aggregating individual and unconnected actions, in considering current travel behavior change methodologies. Also known as individualized marketing, PTP in its current form cannot effectively scale TBC to achieve sufficient volume change across whole cities or regions. TBC and PTP are examined in light of economics, health, environment, marketing, and Internet applications.
