PROPERTIES OF LIGNUM VITAE AND ITS USE AS A BEARING MATERIAL
The bulletin was prepared by Watt V. Smith, for Panel M-16 ( Modernization of Propulsion Shaft System ) of the Ships Machinery Committee, with the cooperation of the Navy Department and others. Summarizing available information derived from laboratory testing of lignum vitae in propeller shaft bearings, the report includes history and botanical information, as well as data on mechanical test, swell, bearing test and abrasive wear. The bulletin is the second of two that outline phases of investigation and evaluation by Panel M-16 of various types of shaft bearings and their related problems under simulated and actual conditions.
