Travel Time Information via VMS in Athens
This paper deals with the way that the link travel times - for both urban road with signalized intersections and freeways - are estimated by the Athens Traffic Management Center (ATMC). The way the travel times are estimated and constantly fine-tuned by the calibration of specific algorithms is presented. In particular, the estimated travel times are regularly compared to the actual travel times of the vehicles traveling through the route, which are being monitored by the ATMC Operators with the use of the CCTV control cameras. In case of a higher than 20% difference between them, calibration of the travel time estimation algorithms takes place. The estimated travel times are used in conjunction with messages about possible congestion in the neighboring road sections for the information of road users via Variable Message Signs and hence, for the traffic optimization of the most heavily used roads of Athens.
