Occupant Detection Systems
Optical-based systems for occupant detection show promise due to their flexibility, reliability and reasonable cost. This paper, originally published in 1997, describes the detection philosophy, function, packaging and application of an optical-based detection system. The potential of the system for out of position sensing and its implications for smart airbag development are also discussed. The author suggests that the same external packaging and hardware can be kept for both types of sensing philosophies.
