CFD simulation and model validation of fuel tank surging in a Formula 1 car

For the battle for Formula 1 (F1) victories even smallest details are important. Improvements which reduce lap times by hundreds of a second can add up to advantages. In respect to the total weight of a F1 race car of just 600 kg a fuel load of 80 kg can massively influence the race car performance. Not only the impact of the fuel load on acceleration, braking and cross acceleration is in focus but even the behaviour of the fuel itself. The Ferrari F1 Team simulates the fuel tank surging with the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) programme Ansys Fluent.
