Birmingham New Street: A catalyst for regeneration
Radical redesign of Birmingham New Street Station is planned. The Birmingham Gateway project will create a new public square outside the station while inside the size of the concourse will be more than doubled under a large atrium. The funding package is backed by Network Rail, Advantage West Midlands, Birmingham City Council and passenger transport executive Centro. The current station suffers from significant overcrowding and is seen as unwelcoming with no real façade. It will be replaced by a curving structure that takes its inspiration from the patterns of railway lines. The project is expected to catalyse regeneration across the region including job and increased economic benefits. The plan is to capitalise on the city centre location of the railway station and to integrate other forms of transport into the overall plan. The proposed redevelopment programme of Birmingham's New Street also be integrated into the station redevelopment programme. While track changes will not be required, re-signalling will take place, as part of the bigger West Midlands re-signalling project. To increase capacity the 12 through platforms will be increased from three to six carriage train lengths. The whole project is expected to be completed by 2015.
