Central London congestion charging western extension - early results
On 19 February 2007, following four years of successful operation, the central London congestion charging scheme was extended from its current 22 square kilometres, to cover an additional approximately 20 square kilometres of central London. The purpose of the charge is to reduce congestion, and current projections suggest there will be a 10 to 14% reduction in traffic volumes within the extension, leading to a 5 to 20% reduction in congestion. Congestion charging brings other benefits, such as reduced vehicle emissions and accidents and improved public transport performance. This paper describes some of the early results achieved as a result of the extension, as well as the performance of the updated camera and ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) technology implemented to enforce the scheme.
