Antilock Braking Systems for Motorcycles and Insurance Collision Losses
Insurance collision losses were compared for motorcycle models with and without optional antilock braking systems (ABS). Regression analysis was used to quantify the effect of ABS on the frequency of insurance claims and claims costs while controlling for rated driver age and gender, vehicle age, and vehicle density of the garaging zip code of the vehicle. Based on the insurance experience of more than 72,000 vehicle years for model years 2003-07, ABS reduced the overall cost of motorcycle collision damage claims by 21 percent, primarily because claim frequency fell by 19 percent. The cost of the average damage claim also fell, but the change was small and not statistically significant.
