TRANSPORT SHIPS AND MARINE TERMINALS FOR MANGANESE NODULES MINED FROM THE DEEP PACIFIC OCEAN
This paper describes the types of operation of large ore transport ships and marine terminals for manganese nodules mined from the deep Pacific Ocean. Conventional dry bulk and slurry handling methods may be utilized, with special features for loading at sea from the mining ship, carrying fuel and supplies outbound, and shuttling crew members ashore. Tailings may also be carried for disposal at sea. Although foreign or U.S. flag ships can be utilized, the American ship would be more expensive. This paper summarizes recent research sponsored by NOAA.
