Assigning Vehicles Types to a Bus Transit Network
In this paper a problem of vehicle type assignment and frequency optimization is proposed. To make the best of this choice a problem is put forward and solved which minimizes the total social cost involved in the systems' operation, made up of both company and user costs. The model solves the problem put forward by mixing optimization and simulation, and considers the link between supply and demand. Consistency is obtained between equilibrium flows, bus frequencies and most favourable bus size on each route, as calculated at each iteration of the solution algorithm. This model can be considered as a model for assigning bus types to different routes. The results of the model are shown in the conclusions where recommendations are also made about which types of buses are best for covering different levels of demand and route frequencies.
