The ACCA Fire / Rescue Department
This article highlights the operations of Pennsylvania's Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACCA) Fire / Rescue Department. Responsible for all aircraft fire emergencies, including structural fires occurring on airport property, the department has 50 employees and operates 19 pieces of equipment. One of the department's main responsibilities is protecting the 100,000 acres that comprise Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). Besides fire protection, the department maintains an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and responds to incidents involving Hazardous Materials / Weapons of Mass Destruction (HazMat / WMD). ACCA also operates the Federal Aviation Administration's Regional Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) Training Facility based at PIT. The training facility offers new and innovative firefighting techniques and is operated by ACCA personnel, who serve as instructors in addition to their regular duties. Recently, the training facility has begun to regularly host the Basic and Advanced ARFF schools, whose courses are presented by the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE).
