Working with Partners and Customers to Achieve Environmental Targets

National Air Traffic Services (NATS), the leading air navigation services provider in the UK, has set specific environmental targets designed to reduce Air Traffic Management (ATM) carbon dioxide emissions by 10% per flight (from a baseline set in 2006) by 2010. To do this, NATS has been working closely with industry partners (e.g., manufacturers, airlines), through the Sustainable Aviation coalition and other initiatives, to find ways to mitigate aviation’s environmental impact. NATS, besides helping the industry meet environmental goals, is also at the forefront of meeting is own corporate environmental goals. Through its two state-of-the-art centers located in Swanwick and Prestwick, NATS is working to make itself a carbon neutral company by 2011, as part of its three-year Vision 2011 business strategy. The company-wide effort will affect NATS' buildings and infrastructure, along with the social/community impacts of its ATM influence. Meeting the 2011 goals will encompass all aspects of NATS' operations – from airspace design to technological innovation to staff training/awareness. The company is also working with the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) Civil Air Services Organization (CANSO) in developing global ATM system benchmarks for efficient operations. NATS is also involved with CANSO in its work with the Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) sector to establish targets for global emission reduction, part of a larger strategy led by ICAO’s Group on International Aviation Climate Change (GIACC).
