WHAT EVERY SHIPYARD NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT MARINE HEAVY DUTY GAS TURBINES
In view of the growing interest in Heavy Duty Gas Turbines (HDGT) for marine use, the author presents typical gas turbine application data which provide the shipbuilder with a more knowledgeable and independent approach towards installation and use of these power plants. The data is intended to promote a better background for estimating and designing such gas turbine systems of all sizes and as an initial aid in defining a basis for bidding on gas turbine powered vessels. The paper develops basic structural considerations for foundations and highlights installation requirements for the five available HDGT sizes. Generic handling and assembly information is illustrated in terms of typical gas turbine components. Maintenance and inspection activities are described in the appendix. These activities are outlined as various functions of duty cycle, and are also briefly described with reference to both engine room layout and events schedules. Detail application data are obtained from the GE engineering staff. A sufficient amount of technical information, however, is presented which permit the shipbuilder to establish feasibility of his HDGT installation.
