A NEW DIMENSION IN LIFE SAVING AT SEA--A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO A NEW ABANDONMENT SYSTEM
An abandonment system has been developed and designed for use on large vessels. The design has been based on analysis of emergency situations and defined functional requirements without considering existing rules and regulations. The system provides safe launching with full complement on board the survival craft by any of the three methods: free fall from heights up to 20 meters, floating off if the ship is sinking and single-point lowering. A prototype system was built and installed on board a 120,000 dwt bulk carrier delivered to the owners in June 1977. In September 1978 a testing period including 9 launchings performed by the crew using both the lowering and the free fall method was concluded, and the system approved by the Norwegian Maritime Directorate as the main survival system.
