MOTIONS OF SMALL BOATS MOORED IN STANDING WAVES
Objective of research was to determine dynamic characteristics of small boats moored with non-linear elastic lines in an asymmetrical manner. Only surge motions considered. The author proposes an analytical model and develops a method for obtaining the non-linear restoring forces and dynamic response of the boat in surge. The restoring force is defined by the material, condition, dimensions and geometry of the mooring lines. Analytical results are compared to experiments conducted on a 26-foot boat with a displacement of 7,000 lb. Good correlation was found. An analytical survey was then conducted on seven boats of various weights to evaluate the range of important wave periods. Experiments were then conducted to determine the effect on moored boat response of flotation chambers which are used on some floating slips. They were found to act as breakwaters.
