ITS to Mitigate Marine Terrorism Effects -- An Investigation of Advanced Technologies and Applications
This paper describes how the vulnerability of the Marine Transportation System to the effects of possible terrorist attacks would not only pose a great threat to the safety of the local community but also the national and international economy. The paper identifies the major security issues and promotes a sense of awareness of the fragility related to terrorism. Case studies for nine of the busiest ports are used to identify the current efforts by ports and the governments to deal with the inherent dangers. The concept of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) architecture is used to develop a framework toward the marine industry to potentially enhance marine port security.
