HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE - DEVELOPMENTS AND INNOVATIONS
Early research and developments in highway maintenance concentrated on materials and on techniques of carrying out the tasks, although effort was also devoted to the problems of measuring road characteristics, particularly slipperiness and riding quality. More recently, maintenance research has followed the guidelines suggested by the Marshall committee and has paid more attention to the assessment of maintenance needs and the determination of maintenance priorities. Rapid methods of measurement and management systems such as chart and March have been developed and intervention levels have been proposed for several of the critical properties. At the same time further improvements have been made in materials and methods of applying them. Implementation of the results of the research and development has, however, often lagged seriously behind. Although a great deal of research needed on maintenance has been completed, much still remains to be done particularly in developing soundly-based economic strategies. /Author/TRRL/
