Low Profile Catenary – An Engineer’s Perspective
This paper describes how a number of Transit Authorities in North America have introduced Low Profile Simple Catenary (LPSC) as a solution in addressing aesthetic concerns especially through a downtown environment. While this solution is more cost effective than a Single Contact Wire system and may resolve the aesthetic issues, it introduces a number of factors that need to be addressed in the design of an LPSC from that of a standard system height Simple Catenary. This paper looks at the differences in the design of the various Overhead Contact Systems (OCS) and some of the solutions that have been adopted to overcome the engineering challenges in the design of an LPSC system.
