SAFETY VEHICLE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND THE FUTURE OF THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY
Topics covered in this paper have centered on a suggested solution to the nation's energy, safety and resource problem in the automobile industry. Principal attention is given to a research project by a University of New Haven Professor which demonstrates the feasibility of aluminum technology in automobile design, and predicts significant benefit-cost relationships for consumers. Crash performance, durability, and fuel economy may be greatly enhanced. The basic project is described and placed in the context of a total environmental impact analysis. Impact on the overall transportation system is assessed in terms of the parameters injury reduction, economic dislocation, and resource savings. Conclusions suggest that transportation system analysts should seriously consider major technological changes in automobile design to incorporate adaptions of aircraft industry technology.
