Coordinated Transportation Demonstration Results

In many communities there are several public and private transportation plans and services and each of these serves a specific user group. During the past five years, it is becoming increasingly apparent these multi transportation options are not operating as effectively or efficiently as possible for the community or the handicapped and disabled. Recently, coordinated transportation efforts to streamline, economize and better utilize transportation resources has gained attention. However, recent studies and demonstration projects have shown that coordinated transportation programs can be more complex, difficult, time consuming and possibly more expensive that previously envisioned. This paper takes a close look at the ideas behind coordinated transportation efforts and examines the reality that coordinated transportation will not necessarily solve community transportation needs.
