From Arctic to Mediterranean - First Pan-European progress report
This publication gives details of risk assessments for main roads in countries participating in the EuroRAP programme. Safety improvements to black spots have already resulted in the upgrading of safety ratings of roads in those countries that initially took part in the EuroRAP programme. The programme works to ensure that roads protect against human errors made by drivers. The four types of accidents resulting in most killed or seriously injured people are head on collisions, run off the road accidents, side impacts at junctions and collisions involving pedestrians / cyclists. Practical ways to redesign roads to save lives for these accidents are listed. How EuroRAP measures risk, maps risk rates, tracks the performance of road authorities and conducts international benchmarking is explained. Mass action safety programmes are recommended for improving roads, since this approach is more cost-effective than piecemeal change.
