Bus rapid transit in Latin America - the development and operation of bus-based rapid transit systems in South American cities

This book provides a history of the development of bus rapid transit in South America. The advantages of high capacity bus rapid transit (HCBRT)are outlined. These include a system that may be introduced within the time frame of a typical political administration and with a relatively low cost. The appeal of these systems is that the extend beyond captive low income demand to a significant proportion of the middle class, whereas the cost of them is usually within the lending capacity of the major development agencies. The design of bus networks to cope with expanding cities is described. Topics covered in the remaining chapters include: the development of integrated bus transport systems in Brazil; the TransMilenio system, Bogota; El Trole - the Quito trolleybus system; the integrated transport system in Goiania; Joinville - an integrated system in a medium-sized city; Sao Paulo HCBRT- planning for a megalopolis; New HCBRT systems in Guayaquil, Ecuador and the Transantiago System Chile, while the final chapter covers Fortaleza - upgrading an existing integrated system to HCBRT.
