NEW TECHNIQUES IN GEOPHYSICS AND DRILLING FOR EARTHWORKS AND GROUND ENGINEERING
NEUE VERFAHREN DER GEOPHYSIK UND BOHRTECHNIK FUER DEN ERD- UND GRUNDBAU
The civil engineer is more interested in mechanical, physical and chemical data as criteria for the feasibility of a construction project and the planning of special provisions, than the geological sequence of the ground. However such information is important if locally obtained knowledge is to be extrapolated for future cases in the surrounding area. The author shows examples of this (water in-flows from the periphery of the site, ground water fluctuations, slope failures, instability and others). A geological description of the strata is more informative than just laboratory test results. Long-term monitoring simplifies analogy conclusions. Using conventional ground exploration techniques the methods of applied geophysics are critically examined. Fundamentally new methods and instrumentation are required. Real gaps in information available from conventional methods must be closed if this is to be properly interpreted. The following developments are described: (a) the argus system is a cartographical method using specific electrical resistance from ground level downwards for the vertical sequence. (b) the gamma method is a cartographical method based on the specific natural emission of geological substances. (c) electronic coring is a technique made possible by the progress of electronics for exploring strata boundaries at depth by means of a feeler tip on the drilling bit and built-in electronics. This method is described in detail. Even at great depths only a minimal flow of information is necessary. /TRRL/
