MODEL ANALYSIS TO DETERMINE THE SUPPORT MOMENTS IN THE DECK SLAB OF DOUBLE-WEB TEE BEAMS (PART 2)

The model experiments showed that for double-web tee beam bridges the variation of the negative support moment due to varying deck slab thickness (haunched cross section) amounted to 25%, and the influence of main girder deflection was up to 47%, so that neither effect should be ignored. It was further shown that main girder deflection could have considerable effect on the moments and shears in the deck slab. In particular the positive support moments due to imposed loads could have a significant effect on the slab design. An appropriate reference should therefore be included in the relevant din standards. Because of the particular choice of simplifying assumptions, the table books of homberg and grashoff give values for the minimum support moments which are on the safe side. The permissible extent of the reduction of these moments when taking account of improved boundary conditions needs to be clarified by further research. /TRRL/
