HOT OR COLD PLANING OF ROAD SURFACES?
STRASSENDECKEN HEISS ODER KALT ABFRAESEN?
During the past few years road planers have come on to the market which easily remove the top 3 - 5 cm of a damaged road surface in order that a new surface may be laid. This process allows unevenness to be removed and smooth surfaces to be roughened without breaking out the road pavement and laying it anew. There are two principal groups of planing machines; those which work cold, without pre-heating the road surface and those which use an ancillary heater to heat the surface to about 150 deg C. The advantages and disadvantages of both types are compared, with the result that the warm planers to which infra-red heaters are fitted, appear to be advantageous. They are kinder to the environment, offer a greater scabbling efficiency (planing speeds of 3 - 6 metres per minute, whilst cold machines have only half that speed) and longer lasting blades. The disadvantages and lower costs of the cold planers are made up for by the greater production. Furthermore, warm planers work to a greater tolerance and offer the opportunity of reusing the warm tailings. /TRRL/
