All-Terrain Vehicle Safety: A Long-Standing Issue

This article helps orthopedic nurses understand the risks of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and use their professional relationships with their patients as an appropriate time to educate parents and young people regarding the dangers of these vehicles. The author first shares a story of a young person in her community who was killed in an ATV accident, including the details of his injuries that resulted in his death, as well as the death of a passenger on the second ATV involved. The author then describes her experiences in trying to educate the community about the danger that presents to children younger than 16 years who are driving an adult-sized ATV that can go up to 60-65 mph, with no roll bar and no seat belt. Statistics regarding injuries and fatalities associated with ATV use are provided. Readers are encouraged to contact the author directly for help with efforts in various states to prevent injuries and deaths associated with ATVs.
