Noise classification of road pavements - task 1 - technical background information - draft report

The difference between a comfortably quiet road and a disturbingly noisy road may be accounted for the road surfacing. The noise from cars and lorries has been reduced considerably, but no significant relief of the exposure to road traffic noise has been recorded over the years since the growth and spread of traffic have offset the technological improvements. While EU regulations exists regarding permissible tyre noise, no such regulations have yet been introduced concerning road noise. This is partly because road surfacing is not a ready-made product. This report considers the progress made in the assessment of the noise characteristics of road surfacings, describes low-noise road surfacings, and considers noise classification systems in use in individual European countries and the USA. European noise research projects are outlined. The UK and the Netherlands are the only EU Member States having a regulation specifying noise performance of pavement surfaces and how to check this in situ. The objectives for setting up a European noise classification system are described.
