Risk-Based Approach for Highway Geometric Design
While a sight distance design basis is focused on, a probabilistic highway geometric design approach is presented in this paper. The reliability is utilized by such a probabilistic approach for hazard probability calculation, which is equal to driver probability of having greater than actually available required stopping sight distance. Design parameter variation in safe design provision for a majority of road users is taken into account by this approach. To demonstrate probabilistic approach applicability in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional analysis types, an application example is presented.
