Impact Analysis: Microsimulation Tools Have Helped Those Involved in the eIMPACT Intelligent Vehicles Project Visualize How Traffic, Safety and the Environment All Interact
In the Socioeconomic Impact Assessment of Standalone and Cooperative Intelligent Vehicle Safety Systems in Europe (eIMPACT) project, microsimulation was used to evaluate advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and intelligent vehicle safety systems (IVSS) for their socioeconomic effects as well as their impact on traffic safety and efficiency. Through microsimulation, primary effects such as the influence on vehicle movements and traffic flow, and secondary effects, such as the mitigation of traffic accidents, were assessed. This article gives a brief overview of the project's framework and examples of results. Using the assessments, a cost benefit analysis of ADAS and IVSS can be made.
