BARGE-CARRYING VESSELS STILL EVOLVING
While the decision by PFEL prior to its financial problems to convert its LASH vessels to all-cellular configuration may have been something of a setback for the barge carrying vessel concept, the US designers of LASH have persevered with the system and following a five year research and development program have come up with two new LASH designs which are aimed to compete directly with modern conventional liner tonnage. Meanwhile the designers of the Capricorn Carrier, the vessel which attempts to combine the best of barge carrying, container and ro-ro capabilities, have also announced new Capricorn designs.
