A Passenger Excursion Craft Sinks

The author examines the United States Coast Guard (USCG) casualty investigation into the May 1999 sinking of the M/V Miss Majestic on Hot Springs, Arkansas' Lake Hamilton. The Miss Majestic sank in less than a minute and resulted in 13 drowning deaths. The Miss Majestic was a rare hybrid craft constructed as an "amphibious truck" (or "DUKW") for the United States War Department. Also known as "ducks" or "duck boats", these vehicles, now primarily in use for commercial land and water tours, were used during World War II and the Korean War as amphibious landing craft. The investigation concluded that the sinking resulted from a number of factors, including: the owner's non-comprehension regarding the USCG inspection program; ineffective vessel operation oversight; lack of written procedures or maintenance manuals; lack of operational recent repair testing; required safety alarm absence; safety equipment inoperability; and vessel modifications.
