Share-A-Bike
Although share-a-bike programs are a fairly new concept, they have quickly caught on as an innovative alternative to traditional transportation modes. In bike sharing, users usually pay a membership subscription and hourly user fees to rent a bike for use in the city. Bike sharing is useful in densely-developed areas, and are often used in conjunction with other public transit modes to reach destinations that are just beyond walking distance. Many of the programs are financially supported by allowing the company operating the program to have extensive advertising rights. Bike sharing programs are especially popular in Europe, where they have had a significant impact on other forms of public transit and automobile travel. Several U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C. and Arlington, Virginia, have firm plans to implement share-a-bike programs in the near future.
