Perfect Timing: An East Coast Taktfahrplan

Switzerland has developed a railroad timetable plan called Taktfahrplan that is an integrated national timetable produced by consensus building involving democratic bodies, the national railway, smaller railways, and operators of buses, boats and mountain lines. The Netherlands has developed a similar approach. Three key features of a Taktfahrplan include a coherent network of services, hourly cycles that repeat without significant variation throughout the day, and mirror-image timings to ensure consistency between the plans for each direction. This article discusses whether the Taktfahrplan approach is feasible for the East Coast Main Line in the United Kingdom. Findings from a recent study commissioned by the Association of Train Operating Companies suggest that using the Swiss and Dutch timetabling principles could have significant benefits in terms of connectivity and deployment of capacity for the East Coast Main Line.
